The new Expresscard Standard
As happens with any facet of technology, change is inevitable. PCMCIA or Cardbus has been the standard for laptop addons for quite some time. Many new laptops, however, are now shipping with what’s called an ExpressCard slot.
The ExpressCard (or sometimes Express Card) comes in 2 sizes - 34 or 54 millimeters, often written as ExpressCard/34 or ExpressCard/54. The 54 is the same width as the old PCMCIA standard, though much thinner. The ExpressCard should also open up new possibilities with much faster and more consistent data transfer.
As with all new technologies, the rarity of ExpressCards drove up prices for a long time. However, as the standard finds its way into more and more notebook computers, the production has gone up and cost has come down.
